Are you a Clutter Bug?

Are you a Clutter Bug?

You probably are if you are reading this blog which is why I have decided to write this article.  We as Americans all live in a “shop-til-you drop” society.  If you are like me, the temptation to indulge in stuff is everywhere. But you can’t keep hauling stuff it in unless you start hauling it out, or eventually your house will explode!  I have staged many homes that are at that point.  People just do not know how to part with their stuff.  The overwhelming need to hang on to anything and everything is so strong.  In fact, that is why we feel the need to display anything and everything ever found, purchased, passed along or received as a gift.  So what do you do when you’re faced with an unsightly reality of this house crippling problem?

The quickest remedy is easy.  Start packing!  Boxing up  – by doing so you’ll easily relieve yourself of two problems.  Your house will show like the spacious, carefree space it was meant to be and you will have gotten a jump start on your own relocation.   Do not try to do every room at once.  Start with one room, separate items in what you absolutely have to have and what you want in your new home and things you do not need.  The trick is to get rid of these items immediately.  Do not go down memory lane with each item.  Believe me, the more you procrastinate, the more likely the entire process will seem like a chore and you will quickly loose your motivation to continue.  Once items are packed, store them neatly in the basement, a secondary room or garage.  Stack them neatly and label each box.  Do not fill each box completely, leave an additional 30% more room in case other items are found throughout the house that now have a place to be stored.

In the future, consider this rule, if you bring something in, get rid of something old.  Once you remove the clutter that is literally choking you to death, you will feel fantastic!  So many of my clients say they cannot believe how much better they feel once they make the decision to rid themselves of all the stuff they simply do not need.
